HURLEY PRO 2010

After being postponed twice this year, the Hurley Pro 2010 was finally held on the first weekend of November at the bay of Klimøtller. The waves were far from perfect but the DKK 5000,- offered to the winner shined the event, attracting surfers from several countries.
Viking team rider Oliver Hartkopp once again took out this years title and now has a great lead on the Danish Junior Ratings. Ollie didnt mind the cold water and shifting conditions and did a great job not only on the Junior division but also in the mens open division where he passed a couple of tough heats before bowing out in the quarters.
In the girls division Venezuelan surfer Narayana Monfleur once again showed her dominance in the sport and took this year's title, followed by Anna Larson and Josefine Lutzau.
Finally, in the open mens division the lone german in the contest, Jonas Bronnert, upset the local boys to take the DKK 5000,- home. The final heat was hotly contestable, with Dominican surfer Victor Rosario placing a close second, with last years champ Christoffer Hartkopp in third and local Casper Steinfath in fourth place. I had a bad day and lost before the finals, but im still holding the lead on the Danish Rankings.
After the contest we all met up in the NASA surf club for dinner and a ping-pong tournament, which once again was won by Jesper Mone.

Brainfreezers

The waves in Denmark are getting colder. Today I got the first brainfreeze of the season... it really hurts. Feels like there are bees inside my brain. We got some pretty sick shots though - comming soon! In the meanwhile my little bro, Jonas Wolthers - 13 yo - is starting getting familiar with the last foot of the longboard, in Brazil. This is on our dad's board, Viking Curuiser 9.8 shaped by Armando Jaguary.

Hurley Longboarderley 2010

The Hurley Longboarderly was held last saturday, the 22nd of August on the reef of Klitmoller, Denmark. The event was a great sucess and gathered the best cruisers of Scandinavia. I had the pleaseure to be judging and commentating the event alongside Hurley team rider Mor Maluco.
The waves weren´t epic, but still very contestable and all the competitors had a good time. Local knowledge proved to be the key element as Klitmoller´s favourite grommet Peter Stainfath, 14 won all his heats to take the Men´s open division title, leaving behind his older bro Casper in second place. In the Women´s division Hurley Team rider Vahine Itchner showed some progressive surfing to take the title. In the SUP expression session Casper Stainfath showed his dominance in the sport and took out the title.
After the contest we gathered at NASA surf club for some food and ping-pong comp. Even though Pinho gave it a good go and showed his Divisa skills, it was Jesper Freya who won the ping-pong tournament, defending his 2009 title.

Im back to Copenhagen facing the books for - hopefully - one last time before getting my uni degree. But Im really looking forward for the next couple of months as I´ll be travelling around Europe and doing loads of fun contests. For now check out this litlle clip made by my cousin Svenn Aage early last year for the night club/coffee bar Bikkini Barista, in Santos - Brasil. The idea was unite all concepts of the house: surf, coffee and party. Surfing in that thing was harder than I had imagined, but the coffee was so good.

Agger Situation

Summer in Denmark means small but very satisfying surf. Never before has the water been so warm here. Yesterday I had a nice little session with Mor Meluka, Ollie, Jonas “Muhh” and all the underground grommets at Agger. Thanks Simon Lauritsen, for the pics!

SHAKA!

Summer Time.

I returned to Denmark a couple of weeks ago to meet up with my family and do some contests. I had just enough time to drop some stuff at home before hitting the road again, but now with the Wolthers gang. The plan was to make a family attack on the second stop of the Danish Surf Tour. In total we were 8 Wolthers ready to battle in the uncommonly warm waters of Klitmoller against the best Nordic surfers. Unfortunately Mother Nature didn’t cooperate with the waves, and the contest was called off.
Instead, the event organizers – namely Mike - decided to hold stand-up paddle races – with a team challenge race and an individual “long” distance race. In the team division, the Wolthers team was formed by my litlle bro Jonas, my dad, our newest family member- Leandro Rasta-man Wolthers and myself. Even though we have only paddled on a few occasions before we gave it a good go and came in second place, behind the Klitmoller-locals, led by Jonas “muhh” man. On the individual race I had a bad start, falling off my board after colliding with other racer. But I managed to come back into it and place a pretty cool second place – once again.
This was my first time racing on SUP´s and I loved it. Differently from surf contests, where the winner is decided by subjective analysis, there is no secret in deciding who wins a SUP race. I liked this thing so much that I’m joining the Danish team for the Stand Up Paddling World Cup in Hamburg at the end of August.
Other than that I’ve been staying with my family and enjoying the Danish summer. At this moment im on my way back to Klitmoller where the plan is to stay the rest of the summer training, drinking coffee with the Hurley crew, and giving a couple of surf Lessons before the contests begin.

Euro Road Trip

For the last two weeks I have been on the road with the MST crew searching for waves, seeing new places and getting to know different people. We started our journey at Copenhagen, passed through Holland, Belgium and ended up staying a week in Bretagne; North France. Bretagne is an amazing place, beatifull landscape, welcoming people and home to some of the most charming cities I have ever seen. Up there, we scored some pretty good waves at a beach called La Palue. As the swell decreased we decided to continue our journey and head south. At the moment we-re staying at a beach called Lafitenia, half an hour south of the chaotic Biarritz. We arrived here yesterday and already scored some pretty decent waves. Freddie has just bought his new camera took the opportunity to shoot some frames. Next we-re heading west to spain, before going back to Denmark for the Danish tour. Looking forward to watching the match there! Shaka!

Maiden Blog-Post

Welcome to HangFree! This is my first blog post! Here I will be updating my impressions on life. I have recently delivered my bachelor project and I´m almost done with studies. To celebrate that I’m hitting the road with the medister surf team. The plan is to drive from Copenhagen, Denmark to the north coast of Spain – or even Portugal. There are actually no plans other than following the coast line and moving according to swells and tides. I´ve been wanting to do this trip for a long time now, so im frothing about it! The forecast looks promising, there are two major swells hitting north of France within the next 8 days! We´re actually leaving in 5 min so I have get ready! First stop is a beach located on the outskirts of Amsterdam. Stay toned for updates, photos and video!
